Logicool Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps Limited, Unit 1 Highwall Business Park, Tetron Way, Swadlincote. Derbyshire. DE11 0AF
For our new premises, Logicool wanted to showcase our own design and application ability. We are strong believers that “Brand First, Solution Second” is not necessarily the way to approach any project. Every project should be “Solution First, Brand Second”. This therefore allowed us to showcase our brands, comply with current regulations and demonstrate industry leading energy efficiencies within a reasonable budget.
The premises comprise of almost 15,000ft² of Office, Warehouse and Training space. The building is constructed to modern regulations and is well insulated. It was felt that heating or cooling the warehouse space was not necessary as the insulation. location of the building and the natural ventilation allowed for an acceptable working environment all year round.
The Office and Training section of the building comprises of 253m² of usable space with between 12 and 24 occupants depending on whether visitors were in the building.
The Air Conditioning design was selected at 23°C DB with an ambient of 32°C. All fan coils were selected on low fan speed. One particular challenge was the Reception/Atrium area which was floor to ceiling external windows facing from SSE to SSW.
The Air to Water Heat Pump design was selected with the Buffer as the primary circuit. This was selected with a view to being four times greater than the volume of the water in the secondary circuit. This enabled us to maintain a very large volume of water at 35°C, reducing the requirement of the Monobloc unit but also encouraging the systems to run permanently but at a minimum power input. To ensure that the system would be able to work in unexpected low ambient conditions but also to showcase the technology. we selected 2 x Mitsubishi Electric 5kW Ecodan systems. These are installed in a Cascade style configuration.
The Ventilation system was selected at 12 litres per second per person but at low fan speed. Most installations are selected at high fan speed with little thought given to the noise of the unit. Our selection was based on the fact that a unit offering 500m³/hr at high fan speed would offer a noise level of 35dBA whilst a much larger unit offering 1000m³/hr operating at a much lower fan speed (50% capacity) would offer 27dBA. Therefore we have larger units with a noise level over 200% less than the more cost effective solution.
